科技英语翻译 被动语态及长句的翻译

1. 被动语态的翻译

被动语态的广泛使用是科技英语中的一大突出特点，汉语虽然也有被动句，但使用范围狭窄得多，翻译英语被动语态时，既可以译成汉语的被动句，也可以译成汉语的主动句，而且译法灵活多样。

1.1 译成汉语被动句

将原文句子的主语仍然译作主语，在谓语前加“被”或省略“被”；也可在行为主体前

加“被”、“由”、“受”、“为”、“所”等；还可以译成“是……的”结构。

The first stage of a rocket is thrown away only minutes after the rocket takes off. 火箭的第一级在火箭起飞后仅仅几分钟就被扔掉。

The volume of a gas is inversely proportional to its pressure if the temperature is held constant.

By using this new process the loss of metal was reduced to 20 percent．
采用这一新工艺使金属耗损降低为原来的20%。

Care should be taken at all times to protect the instrument from dust and damp．

应当始终注意保护仪器，使其不沾染灰尘，不受潮。

如果温度保持恒定，气体的体积与压力成反比。

The moon，as well as the stars and the sun，is made use of by the mariner to find his latitude and longitude at sea.

1.2 译成汉语主动句

(1) 译成有主语的主动句。

翻译时，更换原文的主语或增加泛指性的主语。

A right kind of fuel is needed for an atomic reactor.

原子反应堆需要一种适宜的燃料。

To explore the moon’s surface，rockets were launched again and again.

为了探测月球的表面，人们一次又一次地发射火箭。

(2) 译成无主句。

翻译时，把原文的主语译成动词的宾语，有时还可以把原文的主语并入谓语一起译。

When work is done against friction，heat is produced．

当克服摩擦而做功时，就产生热。

2. 长句的翻译

前面我们曾经说过，大量使用长难句是英语科技文章的一个特点。要正确地理解和翻译英语科技文章的长句，必须首先分析理解原文的句法结构，找出整个句子的中心内容及其各层意思，分析几层意思之间的逻辑关系，然后再根据汉语的习惯正确地翻译原文。对于英语科技文章的长难句一般采用顺译、倒译、分译、综合四种翻译方法。

2.1 顺译

当英语长句的句法结构、时间顺序、逻辑关系符合汉语习惯时，可采用顺译的方法。

In the course of designing a structure，you have to take into consideration what kind of load the above mentioned structure will be subjected，where on the structure the said load will do what is expected and whether the load on the structure is put into position all of a sudden or applied by degree．

分析：该句为主从复合句，what kind of．．．subjected，where．．．expected和whether．．．degree是动词take的三个宾语从句。此句的语法结构与逻辑关系基本与汉语相同，可按原文顺序翻译。

译文：在设计一个结构物时，必须考虑到：结构物将承受什么样的荷载，荷载将在结构物的什么地方起作用，以及这荷载是突然施加的，还是逐渐施加的。

The cables bear on specially constructed saddles on the towers，which are shaped to accommodate them，the saddles being either fixed so that the cables may slide over them，or mounted on rollers

2.2 倒译

当英语长句的句法结构、时间顺序、逻辑关系与汉语习惯相反时，可采用倒译的方法。

This is why the hot water system in a furnace will operate without the use of a water pump，if the pipes are arranged so that the hottest water rises while the coldest water runs down again to the furnace．

分析：这是一个主从复合句。why引导表语从句，在从句中还有一个if引导的条件从句，该条件从句是the hot water．．．a water pump的条件状语。在条件从句中so that又引导结果状语从句。此句应采用倒译的方法即按汉语的表达习惯将条件状语放在前面。

译文：如果管子的安装能使最热的水上升，而最冷的水流下来后再返回锅炉里去，那么，锅炉中的热水系统不用水泵就能循环，道理就在此。

The bending moments，shear and axial forces，and deflections of reinforced concrete frames at any stage of loading from zero to ultimate load can be determined analytically using the conditions of static equilibrium and geometric compatibility，if the moment-curvature relationships of the sections are known．

分析：这是一个主从复合句。if引导条件从句，主句较长，主句的主语为the bending moments．．．from zero to ultimate load，在主句中using．．．geometric compatibility为状语，修饰主句动词can be determined。该句应采用倒译的方法按汉语的表达习惯将条件状语放在前面翻译。

译文：如果截面的弯矩——曲率关系已知，钢筋混凝土框架从零到极限荷载间任一加载阶段的弯矩、剪力、轴向力和挠度，均可以通过静力平衡与几何相容两个条件应用解析方法来确定。
