International Translation Day is celebrated every year on 30 September on the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered as the patron saint of translators. The celebrations have been promoted by FIT (the International Federation of Translators) ever since it was set up in 1953. In 1991 FIT launched the idea of an officially recognized International Translation Day to show solidarity of the worldwide translation community in an effort to promote the translation profession in different countries (not necessarily only in Christian ones). This is an opportunity to display pride in a profession that is becoming increasingly essential in the era of progressing globalisation.
Every year, FIT suggests a theme for the occasion in order to get translators around the world thinking and writing about a unified topic related to an aspect of the profession. The theme for 2009 is Working Together. As the International Federation of Translators explains it presents an opportunity to "take a fresh look at why and how it pays to join forces." In the weeks leading up to Translation Day, translators and other language professionals who blog, tweet, and keep in touch via other social networking tools can participate by contributing their thoughts to the international discussion. FIT even provided prompts for all of us to think about in the official statement, which I’ve reproduced here:
The theme for 2008 is “Terminology: Words Matter”. In the South African context, the development of terminology in the African languages still has a long way to go. Some very good work is being done, but there is little coordination of the efforts. Language practitioners at the coalface are often faced with having to come up with suitable solutions on their own. What can be done to remedy this situation? The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) is holding a Standardization of African Languages Terminologies Conference on 25 and 26 September — perhaps some innovative ideas will be forthcoming.
The International Translation Day was celebrated under the following themes:
* 1991: 'Launch of International Federation of Translators'
* 1992: 'Translation - the vital link'
* 1993: 'Translation a pervasive presence'
* 1994: 'The many facets of translation'
* 1995: 'Translation a key to development'
* 1996: 'Translation and copy right'
* 1997: 'Translating in the right direction'
* 1998: 'Good Translation practices'
* 1999: 'Translation - Transition'
* 2000: 'Technology serving the needs of translation'
* 2001: 'Translation and Ethics'
* 2002: 'Translators as agents of social change'
* 2003: 'Translators right'
